Laos Angeles is a proud partner of the 35th Annual Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, taking place on May 2 - 10, 2019. More on the festival here.

Origin Story
At age 14, Kulap took her father’s side in an argument and her mother’s response would change her world. “Why are you defending him? He is not your real dad” would remain a phrase emblazoned in her mind forever. It would take Kulap twenty years to finally process her mother’s meaning. At age 33, a successful radio personality, actor, comedian and writer living in LA, she decides to embark on a personal journey to find out the truth behind her birth father, her family’s past in Laos and the immigration process that led to her parents’ arrival to the States.

Last Night I Saw You Smiling
The past is not a foreign country. We live through our present bearing the impact of our histories, both personal and collective, in our hearts, our minds, and our bodies. Director Kavich Neang’s documentary feature debut captures beautifully this oft-elusive sentiment through a experimental love letter to Phnom Penh and his Cambodia.

Actress Wanted
Shot in Orange County’s Little Saigon and around neighborhoods in Garden Grove and Westminster, the quotidian lives of local Vietnamese and familiar haunts take on a sinister veneer through Minh’s lens. Discouraged by both lack of and failed auditions, Mai and her roommate, Long (Isabelle Du) commiserate in their sun-drenched apartment. Desperate to book a job, Mai answers a mysterious newspaper advertisement that seemed tailored for her, a Vietnamese-American actress. One can interject critical commentary here about the continuing lack of roles, both advertised and let alone created, for Asian Pacific American actors. Ignoring her own skepticism, she dispatches herself to the remote, isolated residence of her employer Vu, where nothing is what it seems.
